Our Stories

Stories of Hope

Courtrooms can be intimidating places; even for adults. Now, imagine facing that environment as a child.

For many children involved in child protection or custody cases, stepping into court can feel overwhelming, confusing, and deeply frightening. Some are there to testify, others to be interviewed by magistrates. In these moments, their young voices carry the weight of complex and often painful experiences; and they do so in unfamiliar, formal surroundings that can feel cold and isolating.

But at some of our courts, something gentle is happening.

Tutela has launched a heartfelt initiative; through a kind volunteer; one small but powerful gesture to help bring comfort to children during one of the most stressful times of their lives.

Children who go to court is given a hand-knitted comfort doll and a nutritional package. The nutritional package is to help them during the long waiting time at court.  The soft, handmade dolls are more than just toys; they are symbols of safety, care, connection, and HOPE. They remind each child that they are not alone. That someone, somewhere, took the time to create something just for them. That even amid their challenges, there are people who truly care.

It’s a simple act; but one that brings HOPE.

Tutela were priviledged that Hugenote College allowed our leadership to attend their Leadership training for a third of the course fee.

This Social Innovation Training is transforming practices at Tutela

When leaders and social work staff from Tutela embarked on the three-part Social Innovation Training, we expected to learn new tools for innovation and leadership. The training would transform our ways of thinking, working, and engaging with both our teams and the communities we serve.

At the heart of Social Innovation 1, participants were introduced to the concept of Human-Centered Design Thinking; an approach that helped shift thinking from a problem-solving mindset to one of possibility and creativity. Through exploring phases and methods of design thinking, and participating in the Social Innovation Design Challenge, teams gained hands-on experience in crafting solutions that placed the needs and experiences of beneficiaries at the centre.

For one team member, this meant re-imagining how Tutela could better serve older persons in their care; by involving the clients themselves in the co-design of new wellness activities.

I learned that empathy and listening are the foundation of real innovation,” she reflected. “We started asking better questions, and our clients responded in ways we couldn’t imagined.”
